Casa Emma
Near Balzo, Marche, Italy
Simply furnished one bedroom apartments.
Set in the Monti Sibillini National Park in the little hamlet of Fonditore Casa Emma is the perfect base for those wanting to explore one of Italy's most beautiful natural treasures.Overlooked by one of the highest mountains in the Apennines, Monte Vettore, which at over 2,400m is the highest in the park, Casa Emma is set in a wooded valley, where if you're very lucky, you may even spot one of the Apennine wolves that lives in the area or see a golden eagle soar overhead. The house itself was renovated in 2004 and divided into cosy apartments and the location is ideal for walkers and for those wanting to relax and immerse themselves in nature.Just a kilometre away is the slightly larger village of Balzo, which has two bars, a shop and an excellent restaurant. The Monti Sibillini National Park is a vast park covering nearly 2 million acres, making it the third biggest in Italy. There is a considerable variety of terrain and landscape. Great walks begin from your doorstep, including the recently launched Grande Anello, a series of walks which form a ring around the central Apennine mountain chain. In fact there is wonderful walking throughout the area, with footpaths marked and described on maps available in the information centres to be found in all the towns and villages in the park. There are also peaks with a truly alpine character, like Monte Bove, whose formidable north face offers climbing for mountaineers.
In winter there is ski-ing and the area is especially suited for cross-country ski-ing expeditions.
