Puglia, or Apulia in English, is Italy's gateway to and from the East, being conquered by countless foreign rulers. Puglia's history is preseved in the architecture of the region, where Grecian style is as common as the traditional roman style. Apulia also has its own subspecies of architecture, called barocco leccese, renowned for it's ornate carvings. Many of which can be found on the buildings & churches in the city of Lecce.
Apulia is also known for its unique i trulli. Whitewashed conical stuctures made of stones held together without mortar, they are visible in Puglia's many wheat fields and olive groves, and serve as miniature barns, and are a stunning sight when clustered together in the hundreds, to form a town. One such town is Alberobello, and is a site you will never forget.
The wonderous coastline is littered with tiny fishing ports, and also hosts some of the meditarainians cleanest beaches and waters.
Puglia also hosts one of Europes largest forests, the Foresta Umbra, which is occupied by legions of animal species such as roe deer, wildcats, fox, wild boar, fallow deer, goshawks and eagle owls. The Foresta Umbra is criss crossed by many marked trails which are ideal for walking, cycling and pony trecking.
